Nine-time title winner Ryan Giggs talks about the moment he found out United had won the title and why it was a team success...
Where were you when you found out United were champions?
I was at my mate’s house. I’m not always very good watching the opposition teams play. Whenever I watched Chelsea at my house this season they always seemed to win. But, I’d gone to my mate’s house to watch Chelsea play Newcastle a few weeks previously and they’d drawn, so I thought ‘right, I’d best go there again’ for the Arsenal match. During the Newcastle game I turned the television off because I was convinced that Chelsea were going to score and win. But I managed to sit through the full match against Arsenal.
How did you react at the final whistle?
It was great, yeah. I was with all my mates and they’re all United fans so it was really good celebrating with my friends. But, I couldn’t wait to see my team-mates and celebrate it with them, and then after all the players were just looking forward to the West Ham game to enjoy it with the fans.
How hard was the game against Manchester City, Sir Alex said a few players were running on empty?
Yeah, and I was one of them! It was tough coming off the back of the defeat to Milan. We just knew that we had to dig out a result against City to more or less win the championship. You’ve got to push yourself over the line no matter how tired you feel because you know what’s at stake. In those situations you have to pull together, and we defended well as a team and kept our discipline. We had a little bit of magic from Cristiano getting the penalty and I think everyone knew that although it wasn’t mathematically over, we fancied our chances of finishing the job.
This is considered Sir Alex’s third team, how does this one compare to the previous two?
I think this side reminds me of the ’93 team the most. That team was a true counter-attacking team, with the likes of me, Sharpey and Andrei Kanchelskis. And with players like Ince and Keane, we had the ability to work from box to box. We’ve got the same again now. There is a lot of power and pace going forward in this current side with Wayne, Cristiano and Louis [Saha]. There’s plenty of speed in attacking areas. But, because we are an attacking team, that makes the way the defence has played this year even more impressive. The lads at the back have been brilliant.
How vital has that defensive stability been in going for the title, particularly the partnership between Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic?
The stability at the back has been one of the big reasons we have done so well. All champions need a solid back four and goalkeeper, and we’ve certainly had that. Chelsea’s defensive partnership of John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho was one of their major assets. I think they played in almost every game last season. It’s been the same with us this season. It’s not just Rio and Vida, the whole defence has given the team a solid base, and with that you can go out and play attractive football and score lots of goals because you know you’ve there’s a reliable defence behind you.
Which of your team-mates have you been most impressed with this term?
I don’t really like to pick players out, but the way Cristiano has been so consistently good, and for such a young player, that makes him stand out. He has been brilliant this season. As a winger, you’re reliant on players getting you the ball in the right positions. It’s hard to maintain your consistency, but he’s done that and I think everyone recognises it. But it’s hard to single players out because, in my opinion, the real reason we have been so good this season is that collectively, as a team and as a squad, every player has contributed.
It’s been a squad effort?
Yeah, definitely. The manager tells the players that every single member of the squad will play a part. It’s not like 20 years ago, or when I first started, where you’ve got a core group of 14 or 15 players. It’s about 22 or 23 players now. Look at somebody like Henrik [Larsson], he came in for ten weeks and made a big contribution. Fletch and Sheasy have both been brilliant and played in a number of positions. There are a number of players that have been really important to us simply because, if you have injuries, then they slot straight in.
The team has been praised for the quality of football played, but what do the matches against Fulham, Liverpool and Everton say about the team’s resilience?
You can go out and produce performances like we did against Bolton and Blackburn in the second half, but you can’t expect to play like that every week. You have to be content to keep it tight and hold your nerve at 0-0 and maybe get a goal late in the game. You can’t panic, and I think the experienced players help in that respect, but you also need the defensive strength I spoke about and be capable of going out and getting goals at any stage of the match. We’ve showed all those attributes this season and they’ve all come together. That’s why I think it’s been a team and squad effort. The game against Liverpool was a prime example of nicking it late on, and you see it time and time again where championship-winning teams win matches in the last minute – often when they’ve not played that well.
Was there a game where you thought, ‘we’re going to win it’?
I don’t think there was a particular game, but there are moments where you recognised the signs, like Liverpool, Fulham, the second half performances against Blackburn and Everton, where you show real character and resilience. Winning the title is often about grinding results out. We’ve had the right mixture this season of playing some really good football and other games where we weren’t particularly good but got the right result. We’ve shown that we are capable of the attractive football, but we can stick it out when we need to.
