Debate generally divides when it comes to footballers and for every partisan follower there’s an equally vehement detractor. Very few can unite the football purists, but Paul Scholes is certainly one of the select band who can. One of the last conversations held by the late Alan Ball concerned the United midfielder’s sublime lobbed pass for Wayne Rooney against AC Milan. According to Ball’s son Jimmy, the England legend said: “That’s what the game is all about.”

For all the fanfare surrounding the landmark, Scholes simply, quietly turned in a midfield masterclass which was capped by the first goal in a 2-0 win.
