The Irishman’s headline-grabbing moment came at Anfield in March where a dogged United staged the mother of all smash-and-grab raids – O’Shea nicking a last-gasp winner. It came when Ronaldo had whipped in a left-wing free-kick which was parried by Reina, under pressure from Saha, and O’Shea, who was on for Rooney, coolly slotted the ball into the roof of the net to silence the Kop and take the points.

Proving he is a man of many talents, O’Shea was forced to don the goalkeeping gloves in the match at Spurs in February. The Reds had used all three substitutes, so the 25-year-old pulled on the green jersey for the final eight minutes as Edwin van  der Sar was forced off with a broken nose after a clash with Robbie Keane. While his style may be described as unconventional, the makeshift stopper kept a clean sheet, coping with an inswinging free-kick and denying Robbie Keane with a well timed tackle just outside the box.

With Gary Neville out of action with ankle ligament damage, the Irishman has fulfilled the role of right-back admirably. He put his run in the team to good effect with two sterling performances in the Champions League ties against AS Roma in between which he scored in the 2-1 reverse at Fratton Park. He also bagged United's crucial first goal in their stunning 4-2 comeback at Goodison Park.

No-one likes being left out because everyone wants to play in the first team but the manager stressed that we’re going to need everyone in it together if we’re to have a chance of winning trophies this season.” Prophetic words, indeed.
