People are going on about my 20 years here and what we have achieved but that doesn’t matter to me, to be honest, the future is always the most important thing.

I don't think I've watched a single video of any of the trophies that I've won apart from the European Cup Winners' Cup victory over Real Madrid with Aberdeen - I've watched that a few times. But apart from that and a few snatches of the game in Barcelona when we beat Bayern Munich, I don't tend to look back, I always move forward.

I never like putting my head on the block with rash forecasts because football fate is a tricky customer. But I have to be honest and tell you there is a confidence about the place that suggests we are now in a position to pull out all the stops and go for it.

There is a spirit and belief in the dressing room that tells me we will be having a real go for trophies this year.

The last 20 years have been really easy to live with at Old Trafford. It's been magic, and you have to put it down to Alex Ferguson.
The expectations of Manchester United, with all the history, are huge. People expect United to be up there and competing at the highest level. But I don’t think anybody’s had a manager that’s been there for 20 years and had the record that he’s had in one position. It’s fantastic, really. Bill Shankly, Brian Clough… there are certain managers that can stay the distance and go longer than the norm, and Alex is one of them. He’s just terrific.
If there was an exciting player that Matt Busby felt the fans would enjoy watching, Matt Busby would go and sign him and Alex Ferguson’s done the same, the youth policy’s been always part of the tradition here - it’s been marvellous.
Alex has continued producing youth players to (a) do well in their own youth competitions and (b) also to come forward into the first team. Like Matt Busby, he’s never been afraid to give young players a chance.
He’s arguably the greatest manager ever, although I think the fact that Bob Paisley and Liverpool have won the European Cup more times probably grates on Alex a little bit. For the number of times we’ve been champions we’ve not taken it that stage further. I think he’d like to win at least one more European Cup before he packs his bags.
When it comes down to it, he’s a worker. His background of coming up in Govan in the shipbuilding areas of Glasgow… he brought the same mentality and attitude onto the football pitch. He’s completely professional in every way and I’m glad he’s been here for the last 20 years.

I have a massive amount of respect for him and he has been great to me, he made me what I am today, and a lot of other young players what they are today. He was one of the first managers to give young players a real big chance. To do it all at the same time and bring four or five of us through is one of the great things he did."
"He did take a chance on us," admits Scholes. "His judgement was that we could take the club on. He got rid of three or four major players and he put his trust in us to come through for him and perform. The fact we have done that is all credit to him. He gave us a chance when not many managers would have taken such a big risk at such a big club.

"The famous Alan Hansen quote about not winning anything with kids came after we were beaten at Aston Villa on the opening day. It just made us more determined and probably made the manager more determined to bring us through. Even after that, he retained his faith in us and kept picking us. We have managed to produce the goods."

"With him the players come first," he explained. "He never slags anyone off publicly. If he has something to say he does it in the dressing room and it never leaves that. That isn't always the case with managers these days.
"If you do something wrong and he is not happy with it, if you apologise, go and see him and talk to him there is always room to forgive. He knows how important players are and he sticks up for us to the hilt, It makes us feel wanted and that is important to us. I think he does protect us but if something is not right and he is not happy, he will let you know about it.

When someone like Alex Ferguson is picking you, it does give you more confidence. You know he trusts you. There is only so much a manager can do, the rest we have to do ourselves. He cannot kick the ball for us. Trust is a massive thing. He has shown a lot of trust in giving us chance."

"He is trying to do it again now," says Scholes. "He has to. People get older and people leave the club. You have to try and bring young players in. There is no-one better at doing that than our manager.

"Who knows how long he will go on. I don't think he's looking any older. I think he is still enjoying coming out every day on the training ground - even in the freezing cold he still loves it and hopefully it will be a while yet.

"You can’t imagine it here without him. One day it will happen, but I don’t think it will be soon. But when it does happen it will be a shame because he has been fantastic for this club. He has made us what we are today. When a new manager takes over there will be a big void to fill."
