Wayne Rooney came up with the perfect response to his critics with a hat-trick against Bolton last time out in the Premiership - but he says staying top of the league is far more important to him.

Rooney scored three goals in the 4-0 demolition of Sam Allardyce's side at the Reebok Stadium last Saturday, his first goals for the Reds since a double on the opening day of the season against Fulham. But he was more impressed with the team's display, a sign, he says, that United are definite title contenders this term.

It took the Reds back to the Premiership's summit, ahead of Chelsea on goal-difference. Rooney says he prefers being the front runner rather than chasing the leaders.

"It's much better when you are at the top and looking down on teams, we want to stay there for as long as we can and remain there until the end of the season."

Now he is scoring again, the 21-year-old striker gave a warning to the rest of the Premiership, and Portsmouth in particular, that he is on the prowl for more goals.
"[Not scoring] never really got to me," he said. "A lot of people talked about my form and lack of goals. But, as long as the team wins that's the important thing. But, since the Wigan game, I think my performances have been good and I always knew the goals would come.

"I was glad the goals came against Bolton because it shut a few people up. There's no better way to do than with a hat-trick. And you saw with Scholesy that once one comes, more will follow."
